A Random Post about What is Happening Today

Happy MLK Jr Day!

I am off from school and just finished cleaning the tornado disaster area that was my bedroom. It's now all sparkly and new looking and will slowly decrease in disaster area by the next of my semi annual bedroom cleaning event. It's like clockwork.

I also happened to do quite a few other things that shall go up at some point later today...
Finished Nightshade (Review Coming)
Finished Review of 13 Little Blue Envelopes
Finished Review of One Night that Changes Everything
Finished Review of The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove
Finished Review of Dash and Lily's Book of Dares
Finished In My Mailbox post (so what if I'm a little late?)
Finished Picking the Final Contest Winner (and put up the post) (extra days to enter a contest never hurt anyone :) )
So yeah, you guys have some stuff to look out for. And we are one blog follower away from 200, can we fix this? Please????

Well, I'm going to go work on that heck ton list.

Catch up with you later!

xoxo,
Shelbie

A Note...

First of all,

Happy New Year!! 2011, wow how did that happen? I feel like a week ago it was 2010... (I'm funny huh?) Seriously though, it seems like 2010 went by so extremely fast it's crazy!!

Second, my computer spontaneously combusted, well okay maybe it wasn't that dramatic, but when you have a blog event that you have to constantly monitor Earth miaswell have gotten hit by a meteor. All contests are still running but if it seems like I fell of the face of the earth blame the life (or nonlife) of my computer. But it should be fixed soon.

Finally, you can still enter the cover design contest!! I think I've gotten a grand total of two entries, if you enter you don't have much competition so please enter!

I think that's it.

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday!

The Obsession is Back...

Some of you may remember a while ago I had this fan cover obsession...
Well, that came back today. This time I did not one, but a whole series of books. These are inspired by Sarah Rees Brennan's books, The Demon's Lexicon, The Demon's Covenant, and finally, The Demon's Surrender, which is due out next year.
So I thought I would share them with you, because I'm sort of extremely proud of them :)

Soo... what do you think? Commentary?
Anybody have suggestions for the next books to obsess over?

Well, I'm going to get some sleep now :)
tootles!

Quicky Random Post Explaining Stuff

I'm so creative when it comes to naming titles. It's insane. lol

This is just a random post talking about a few things that are gonna be a little bit different.... I don't think it'll be terribly noticable but I wanted to formally annouce some stuff :)

1.) If for some reason you haven't noticed, Amanda and I don't update the blog a whole lot anymore and that is simply because there isn't enough time in the day to do all the things that I want to get done, like reading, and when I haven't read anything I feel awkward posting random stuff... so if anyone has any suggestions to what to do when I don't have time I would absolutely love it (and you!) if you posted them in the nifty comments section at the bottom of this post. :)

2.) That transitions wonderfully to my next point. I am discontinuing the personal blog thing. The thing is that u feel extremely awkward when I'm only posting about myself and I would feel less awkward if it was sort of a blogger thing where someone posts with their version of the post, but seeing as no one did that I just sort of felt like I just kept talking about myself. If you liked them post it in the wonderful comments section mentioned above and if a lot of people like those posts then I guess I'll keep doing them, but it just seemed weird that all the posts were about me... you know?

I think that's it! Look forward to more posts this week!

Shelbie

What I like in a literary lover.

Hi guys! So... I haven't posted in a LONG time... but in the end of August I was on vacation... and then school started.... and along with that my extracurriculars. BUT I am going to write an actual post right now. I don't have time for a review, but am hoping to get some done this weekend, so I'm going to talk about literary lovers, because everyone has a book crush. Anyways, this will probably turn out a bit rant-ish, so feel free to skim.

I don't know about you, but usually my favorite part of a book is the main guy character, especially if he is extremely sexy. (Jace Wayland anybody?) And of course, it's hard not to lust after all the badasses in YA novels, especially when they have a slightly more than human part of them. (Jace Wayland, Luc from Personal Demons, Nick from The Demon's Lexicon.. need I say more?) But sadly... when it comes down to it, I realize that I gravitate towards the endearing characters in the books I read. However much I may lust for that badass demon or demon slayer I realize that I really like the good old fashioned, boys-next-door, slightly dorky, human guy. Does anyone else just get weak knees when they think of the puppy dog best friend in a book? I don't know what it is... but they're definitely my favorite. When Cole was introduced in Linger, I still had a girlish crush on Sam. And Simon in The Mortal Instruments series... he's sweet and funny! And of course... there's Peeta in The Hunger Games. Or even Tony in Infinite Days... talk about pulling on heartstrings! Anyways, I just want to know what kinds of characters you gravitate towards in books. I know Shelbie will probably be settled firmly in kickass demon slayer territory... but I just have a thing for the boy-next-door. Give me a guy who reads, writes music, plays video games, says dorky things, paints pictures of me, or BAKES. That is my true love.

Anyways, tell me what side you're on... badass or boy next door? And don't say.... "Bad ass with a sensitive side..." because that doesn't count. Just tell me what you think... and why? And feel free to share some of your favorite lit hunks :) I have included my list too. Seperated into bad ass and boy next door of course :) So yeah.... tell me your thoughts!

Favorite Badasses(and a few of just plain jerks, but sexy ones.)
1) Jace Wayland (Mortal Instruments Series)
2) Nick (The Demon's Lexicon)
3) Wesley (The Duff) ---- not exactly badass, but DEFINITELY not boy next door.
4) Luc (Personal Demons)
5) Patch (Hush, Hush)
6) Will (Clockwork Angel)
7) Mr.Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)
8) Heathcliff (Wuthering Heights)

Yes, the last two don't really fit, but I had no where to put them.

Favorite nice guys/boys next door:
1) Adam (Endless Summer)
2) Doug (Forget You)
3) Tony (Infinite Days)
4) Peeta (The Hunger Games)
5) Simon (Mortal Instruments Series)
6) Alec (Mortal Instruments Series)
7) Sam (Shiver)
8) Wes (The Truth About Forever)
9) Gilbert (Anne of Green Gables)
10) Jem (Clockwork Angel)
11) Han (The Demon King)
12) Amon (The Demon King)

Some are missing.... I know. But I can't remember all of them. Anyways... Enjoy!

Love always,

Amanda

Kay Now I Know I'm Obsessed....

I entered a contest!

I have to link the picture somewhere so I thought "Why not to another blog post about my obsession!?" So I'm going to!
I did a cover for The Emerald Talisman by Brenda Pandos and it's over there on the right -->

Isn't it pretty *pets* I'm so proud of it!
Kay, well, that was random :)

Want me to remake your favourite book? Comment with what cover you want me to do :)

Well, bye!

Welcome September!

It's September 1st! How weird is that? I had orientations today and it was so weird to say "See you on Tuesday!" School. On Tuesday. I need to get back to a normal sleeping schedule.

A few random things I don't know where to put, so I'll insert them here:
  1. We have a formspring now! If you have questions for us you can ask them HERE
  2. We have a YouTube too... that one is right HERE

Thats it for the random. Now to what this post was actually supposed to be about: the first of September entitles a new month and along with that a new Genre of the Month. If you haven't noticed already, the Genre of the Month is always located at the top of the website under the header. Just in case you forget what it is :)

So this month we are doing Books into Movies. I know it's technically not a typical genre but I thought it would be fun to do anyway. :)

Okay, now you can either read books that are already films or books optioned for fims. If you aren't totally sure what books to pick here's a couple websites I found helpful:

The Five Books I (Shelbie) am Planning to Read:

  1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
  2. Beautiful Creature by Kami Garcia and Magaret Stohl
  3. Fallen by Lauren Kate
  4. Hoot by Carl Hiaasen
  5. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

Happy September! What are you going to read for it?

Month in Review: August 2010

Yo. Whaddup my blogger peeps?

This past month was a pretty epic month for The Mortals Library. Which makes it super fun for me to do this month's review.

The Usual Suspects:

1 new quote page
8 News Updates
11 Reviews (7 were of Fantasy books)
3 Blogger Interviews
2 Author Interviews
65 Sweet Twitter Followers
131 Epic Blog Followers!

Cool Stuff Unique to This Month:

    1. Fantasyfest! Our first full month blogger party (I'm blanking on what exactly to call it)
    2. We surpassed 100 Blog Followers but were too busy with Fantasyfest to throw a party for it. Don't worry when we reach 200 then we will :)
    3. The Cassandra Clare interview we did was translated into Italian. So that was pretty cool!
    4. We caused some Twitter controversy with the fan cover at the bottom of the above interview. We had issues with people thinking we premiered the real one here. Not true. But if it was that would be sweet. lol.

Up and Coming:

For us, school starts on Tuesday. It usually takes me (and maybe Amanda idk) a while to get back into the swing of things schoolwise and activitywise once it starts. So don't be too shocked if the blog is kind of on the back burner until we get integrated back into the schedule of school and school-like things, especially because Amanda and I are both taking very academically challenging classes this year.

Our piggybanks and the fact that we'd both like to keep semi-eventful social lives (I know apperently we have those!) unfortunately can't afford to have a themed blog party every month so were back to just normal Mortal's Library things for September! But Amanda and I are already started on the next party :) which I am super physched for!

That's what's up with The Mortal's Library. What's up for you?

xoxo,
Shelbie

Mockingjay comes out today!!!!!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys, guess what comes out today? MOCKINGJAY BY SUZANNE COLLINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you haven't noticed, we're uber excited. But kind of sad. Because when Mockingjay is over, that means we'll have nothing to build our love affair with the Hunger Games trilogy off of. But, we can promise you epic squealing review(s) when we are finished reading it. Anyways, this is just a post about our girlish excitement for the release of Mockingjay. And just notifying you that we'll be holed up all day reading it. :)

Go forth, buy Mockingjay, and squeal along with us. Trust us, you'll love it.

xoxo and love always,
Shelbie and Amanda

p.s. we're Team Peeta, and my (Shelbie) mom is Team Gale, what team are you?

Vacation announcement!

Hola people! So.... I (Amanda) am going to be gone on vacation starting tomorrow. I'm not sure if this will affect my blogging or not, because I might still have internet. But I might not. Anyways, just wanted to say that starting tomorrow I will not be home until the 29th. Shelbie will be here, and blogger has a wonderful thing called scheduled posts, so this does not meant the Fantasyfest festivities are over. Very much on the contrary. We have one more giveaway on Sunday, the Ultimate Swag Bag giveaway goes until the end of the month, and we have another guest post, some reviews, and an author interview with Cassandra Clare coming up. So, the festivities are NOT over! Unfortunately, this means prizes will not be sent out until the last week of August or first week of September, because Shelbie and I have to get together to mail them. But we will mail them ASAP when I get home. And then you can enjoy your lovely books and swag :) Anyways, I'm going to finish some stuff up today, be off to a party tonight (Happy 16th Birthday M!!!!!), and off to Lake Superior (Madeline Island, woot!) tomorrow morning.

Make sure to participate in our festivities while I'm gone :)

Love always,
Amanda

We need feedback!

Hey guys, as you probably know, we are a relatively new blog. We're only about 3 1/2 months old, and have only been on Blogger since late June (we used Webs before). So, while we have improved our blog (at least by our standards), there is a lot more we could do! Unfortunately, there are some ideas that may be appealing to us, but not very appealing to you. Anyways, we want to hear what you think. We want to know... what do you like about our blog? What don't you like? What do you want to see more/less of on our blog? Do you like when we posts memes, or don't you? (Personally, I like a few, but I think we might have too many.) We want to hear what you think! Just comment on this, tweet us , or e-mail us. We really want to know what you think, after all, we don't jsut blog for our enjoyment, it's only fun if you like it too!

Anyways, either comment on this post to tell us what you think, or shoot us a tweet or e-mail!

Thank you so much!

Excuse me while I yawn while scanning the YA fantasy section...

** WARNING THIS WILL PROBABLY TURN INTO A RANT, BE PREPARED FOR RANTING**

Has anyone else that YA fantasy stuff and YA in general has become the same old stuff recycled over and over again? Don't get me wrong, I love fantasy (duh, Fantasyfest!) but when it is the same old paranormal romance over and over again I tend to get annoyed. Everything you see is about vampires. Girl meets vampire, they fall in love, girl can't see vampire because he is a vampire and could suck her blood. Hmmmm.... does this sound like a certain saga that everyone's been obsessed about? Well, while not every paranormal romance book will have a whiny no good Bella and a creepily overprotective Edward, most of them tend to follow the same story line. And have the same covers. And similar characters. (Note, I don't mean similar to Twilight, but similar to most other PNR novels.) I'm sorry, but as a book lover, I don't like to hear the same story told over and over again. It's very annoying when I'm browsing through books in B&N and all I see are the same old covers and the same old plots. It's frustrating seeing 2 dimensional characters in a very cliche and overused story. Yes, I know what you PNR lovers are thinking, "But there are fallen angels stories too!" I understand this. Trust me, I've read plenty of Angel stories, but only a few are near and dear to my heart. And the rest are the same. "Oh sexy Angel, I can't be with you because you are an Angel!" Well boo hoo. The only thing I hate more than a cliche PNR novel is one that involves a whiny 'so in love' girl. Oh, and the fact that the YA book shelves are infested with PNR. I love any kind of fantasy, but this is just sickening. Where are the sci-fi novels? The historical fiction? Hmmmm? I'm not a fan of historical fiction, but it is very saddening when I can find barely any sci-fi novels on YA shelves. Although... I am a fan of the new dystopian trend. Anyways, I think you've heard enough rant for now. So I am going to compile two lists: 1 of awesome not cliche brain-washing fantasy novels, and one of epic fails. And after you read that, you should tell me what trends you are sick of in books. What cliches you hate. Come on guys, lets have a ranting party! Anyways... here are my lists. They are in no particular order.

Epic fantasy wins:
1. The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare
2. Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (okay, it's a LITTLE cliche, but there are parts in Hush, Hush and Crescendo that are totally amazing.)
3. Tyger, Tyger by Kersten Hamilton
4. Angel Fall by Coleman Luck
5. Linger by Maggie Stiefvater (I'm sorry, Shiver was too cliche, I loved Linger though.)
6. The Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima
7. Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore

Epic fantasy fails (or fantasy books I just didn't like as much.):
1. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer
2. Low Red Moon by Ivy Devlin (I'm sorry... it just wasn't believable.)

Fantasy books that were just "all right":
1. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater (definitely not bad, set up Linger well, but not amazing.)
2. The Heir Chronicles by Cinda Williams Chima ( just didn't like it as much. Not cliche though!)

As you can see, I have tried to distance myself from horribly cliche fantasy books, and have been pretty successful.

Love always,

Amanda

Forums, book clubs, and sister sites oh my!

Hey guys, so.. I believe we posted once about the forum... but I don' think anyone has used it yet. Anyways, it's basically a forum just to talk about books, book related things, post reviews, promote your blog, etc. It is The Mortal's Library forum, however, Shelbie and I are not running it. We just figured it'd be a lot to handle and we really have a lot more interest in this blog. Anyways, our friend Jenni is running it! She's done a great job so far, and has everything set up, but now we just need people to go join!

Also, Jenni has her own blog called The Mortal's Book Club, which is our sister site! On there you sign up to read one, two, or all of the three books they are having for book club, and the books change every two weeks. Not sure if Jenni will post reviews or if it will just be a book club/discussion blog. But anyways, go check it out!

Forum: http://themortalslibrary.freeforumshosting.org/
Book Club: http://mortalsbookclub.blogspot.com/

Anyways, go check it out!

Apperently We Won Something?!

So... we won the versatile blogger award? We won it from the awesome Amelia from The Authoress!

This is how the award works:
Shout from the mountaintop and slap this up all over your blog. :) Link back to the person who gave you the award.

Share seven things about yourself.

Once you're done doing a happy dance, pass this award along to 15 other blogs. It can be awarded for any reason.

Make sure you contact the bloggers so that they know they've won! :)

So I guess I'll post seven things about me and Amanda will if she wants....

Shelbie's 7 Things:

1. I'll be a sophomore in high school this year!
2. I'm a dancer. I love jazz and Musical Theatre dancing!
3. I hate winter. Which is a great thing to hate for a Minnesota kid.
4. I am an avid Pretty Little Liars reader and watcher. I'm addicted!
5. My dream job is to run my own Architecture business.
6. I love back to school shopping. I could live in Office Max! :)
7. I have two dogs and a cat, all of which are completely spoiled! :)

Amanda's 7 things:
1. I am the only girl in my family, with one little brother and 2 older brothers. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing....
2. I am extremely happy. ALL.THE.TIME. Except for when someone does one of my pet peeves.
3. Speaking of pet peeves, I hate when people clean up my room. HATE IT. I'm really specific about where everything goes in there, especially my (color coded) closet.
4. The funny thing? I am NOT a neat person. I don't pick up a lot, my clothes are ALWAYS on the floor. I just happen to like everything in it's right place. And the right place for my clothes is on the floor. :)
5. I really do not like clothes shopping. I like getting new clothes, but I hate trying them on. But I do love shopping for books, cool stuff to hang on my walls, or listfully looking at awesome e-readers that I can't afford.
6. I happen to love Minnesota.  I can't stand the heat. But I don't neseccarily like the cold. I just love Minnesota. Especially in the Fall. Oh, and I love the lakes :) It's weird driving through other states and not seeing tons of lakes.
7. I'm a marketing dork. I'm in a marketing/business club at school called DECA, where you make d campaigns and stuff. It's really intense and I LOVE IT. But that does NOT mean I want to go into marketing when I grow up. Maybe I'll minor in it, but I actually want to be an anthropologist or a sociologist. And I think it'd be cool to work at a museum. :) But not one with paintings and stuff. The other kind, I forgot what it's called.
So Shelbie said we'd tag fourteen blogs, but that was a lie. Because she picked all the blogs that I love. :) I added a few notes to why we picked them though.

Okay I tag:

1. Holly from Good Golly Miss Holly - J showed this blog to me (Amanda) and I really loved the books she was reading, the fact that she had ARC tours, and all the other awesome things on her blog. Plus, Holly is just awesome :)
2. Vanessa and Isalys from Book Soulmates - We really liked this blog, because they reminded us a lot of ourselves. Shelbie and I became friends before we startd sharing books, but like them, we got uber close because we both loved books.
3. Jeremy from Novel Thoughts - Okay, it's just awesome to hear a guy's POV once in a while. And he has  pretty great one.
4. Kris from Voracious YAppetite - I personally love Kris's blog, for her UBER unique blog title, and the awesome names of her posts. (YAdda YAdda for example.) And if you go there, you will see for yourself that everything she writes is extremely well written and totally her own.
5. Monica from Ramblings of a Book Addict - Okay, love that hader, and LOVE her background! Plus, she's just awesome :) And it's kind of cool that she's just a year older than us. But don't quote me on that, it says 16 onher profile and that's what I'm going by!
6. Alyssa, Jake and Gregory from Teens Read and Write - Okay, this blog is totally unique. They review not only books, but movies too. And they always have lots of other fun stuff on their blog! Plus, their header is epic.
7. Pirate Penguin from Pirate Penguin Reads Oooh what to say what to say. Go to this blog and you'll find well writte reviews, and a really awesome header and background :)

So go forth and check out their blogs and go thank Amelia for giving us our first award! eep!

xoxo and Love Always,

Shelbie and Amanda
